The End of Stand-Alone GPS?
Giant-killer Google is now officially in the market with an Android phone GPS system offering turn-by-turn directions via Google Maps on the phone. That, btw, includes a voice-powered search and it should hit the market next Friday via Verizon Wireless.
So is this the end of stand-alone GPS as we know it? Let’s consider. First, there’s the screen size ... Just a touch over 3.5 inches versus today’s standard GPS of 4.3. Next, there’s the data connection: Do you really think you can get Verizon Wireless seamlessly, across the nation? And finally, let’s ponder the implications of GPSing on a phone while driving .... Like when the guy in front of you is not only lost but he’s ALSO staring at his phone. Nice. So are existing GPS systems doomed? I say no.• EH

Satellite Broadband Hits European Roadblock (But All Is Not Lost)
As European policy makers ponder national subsidies for broadband projects, satellite broadband appears to be getting the short end of the stick. As reported by Satellite Today, the satellite sector has been working hard to get its systems considered. Recently released guidelines, however, seem to have pushed the dishes off the table.
The European Commission’s first draft consultation paper concentrated solely on the “transition from copper to fiber-based networks.” And a footnote opined “at this stage … neither satellite nor mobile network technologies appear to be capable of providing very high speed symmetrical broadband services.”
That’s rough stuff for a technology which has moved forward by leaps and bounds, particularly via hybrid technologies, and which can guarantee coverage across the continent. However, satellite broadband is not completely shut out of European markets. Indeed, Eutelsat’s Tooway satellite broadband service announced yesterday that it has been chosen to provide high speed broadband connectivity to homes and businesses in rural Ireland. So while news from the commission may be bad, considerable upside could remain.•

NASA Successfully Launches Ares 1-X
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A one-of-a-kind NASA rocket soared into the Florida sky Oct. 28 in a brief but critical test flight of a new booster slated to launch astronauts into space and, eventually, toward the Moon.
NASA's Ares 1-X booster, an unmanned prototype of the planned Ares 1 rocket intended to carry astronauts after the space shuttle fleet retires, blasted off on an experimental mission from the seaside Launch Pad 39B here at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
"I can't tell you how proud I am of all of ya," KSC director Bob Cabana told the launch team after liftoff. "That was just unbelievable, it was spectacular. I got tears in my eyes."
After several false starts due to bad weather, the rocket took advantage of a brief break in the clouds to loft at 11:30 a.m. EDT. Foul weather and a series of unlucky events foiled its first launch attempt the day before. NASA required good visibility for this first flight of the untried rocket.
"Think about what we just did," said launch director Ed Mango after the liftoff.
"Our first flight test and the only thing we're waiting on was weather. That says you all did frickin' fantastic," he told the team.
The rocket lifted off despite a bout of thunderstorms that passed over it the night before. About 150 lighting strikes were seen to fall near the site, with four lightning impacts within about a kilometer of the launch pad. The countdown toward liftoff was delayed Wednesday morning while ground crews checked out the vehicle to make sure it suffered no lightning damage; luckily, the tests showed Ares I-X was safe to fly.
"We looked at all the systems that could have been affected by this and all the data indicates that there was absolutely no real effect," Ares 1-X deputy mission manager Jon Cowart said.
The towering white booster rose into the sky toward the east, peaked at about 45 kilometers altitude, then dropped into the Atlantic Ocean, with parachutes softening its fall. By all appearances, the launch – which was aimed at demonstrating the rocket's design -- was successful.

Hybrid Platforms Boost European Satellite Outlook
As the European video market turns more and more to hybrid solutions, new opportunities are emerging for sat operators, notes a recent report from NSR. The analyst group points to developments such as the Orange TV bouquet in France which offers bundled broadband, telephony and video over aDSL plus a satellite bouquet supplement to serve outlying areas. Another example comes from Portugal’s MEO bouquet where “DTH is the primary service and aDSL are secondary.”
Across the European market, DTH players are facing challenges from DTT platforms. In response, NSR notes, satellite platforms are boosting SD and HD channel options and launching special low-cost bouquets.
In sum, the NSR report sees a diversifying market which new opportunities for satellite operators across the continent – a phenomenon which, the analysts note, is likely to spread to other parts of the world.•

DIRECTV Gets Ready to Spin
DIRECTV moved one step closer to a spin-off/merger with Liberty Entertainment yesterday as the IRS issued a much-expected private letter blessing the tax-free nature of the transaction. Liberty Entertainment (LEI) is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media. According to the IRS’ ruling, the LEI split off will qualify “as a tax-free transaction under sections 355 and 368(a)(1)(D) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.”
The split off now goes to a shareholder vote on November 19. Since virtually no one expects the vote to go against Liberty, the split and the merger should come to fruition quickly. The merger would combine DIRECTV with Liberty’s regional sports nets plus gaming company FUN Technologies and other assets. The combination is expected to help boost Liberty Entertainment’s market value, which has been a key goal of the transaction.•

Spidey Joins Mickey As Disney Buys Marvel
8:42am UK, Tuesday September 01, 2009
Spider-Man, Captain America and the Fantastic Four look set to head to Disney after the entertainment giant swooped on Marvel Entertainment.
The £2.5bn cash and stocks deal means that Walt Disney will have access to Marvel's 5,000 characters.
The buy-up values Marvel at £30 a share and has been agreed by both boards.
It now needs the backing of Marvel shareholders and the competition authorities.
"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Marvel chief executive Ike Perlmutter.
"This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organisation and infrastructure around the world."
Walt Disney last month reported a fall in profits of more than a quarter.
Net profit between April and June came in at £579m, down 26% from the same period last year.
Disney president and chief executive Robert Iger said: "Adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.
"We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney."
Marvel is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
Besides comics, Marvel characters also feature in movies, animated features, videogames and action figure toys.

And Now ... Down on DISH?
The DISH Network has taken a lot of flak over the past year as three quarters of distinctly lackluster performance gave Wall Street the willies. However, DISH scored some gains in the second quarter leading investors to cheer and pushing the stock close to its 52 week high.
But now come the naysayers. In a note released yesterday, BernsteinResearch analyst Craig Moffett takes a “too far, too fast” tack noting: “The satellite business is one of trade-offs. The question for investors is whether Dish Network can achieve growth without sacrificing ARPU and SAC.”
Moffett notes that in 2Q09 ARPU had dropped while SAC jumped and going forward the outlook is less than sunny. Overall Moffett projects a net subscriber loss of 9,000 in DISH’s upcoming reports.
Investors, however, appear unfazed by this as DISH closed yesterday up 3.35% at $19.10.•

More on NBC-U
Waving the red flag of (possible) competition appears to have done its job as the latest word in the NBC-U soap opera gives the edge to Comcast which has reportedly “agreed to agree” on a deal. It’s the same deal you’ve heard before: 51% to Comcast, 49% to GE (assuming, of course, that GE and Comcast come up with an acceptable price for Vivendi’s 20%). The only real “news” in this news is that GE could jettison its entire NBC-U stake in seven years.
Meanwhile, as some critics have dumped on NBC-U’s Jeff Zucker, GE big boss Jeff Immelt defended Zucker to Business Week as being “as good as anyone running a media company today.”•

With organic growth at its French mobile and pay TV business slowing and a possible $6 billion (give or take) windfall from a sale of its stake in NBC-U, Vivendi is eyeing potential acquisitions around the world. So says the Wall Street Journal which also notes that Vivendi’s roving eye is making its investors mighty nervous. The problem is that shareholders value Vivendi for its stability and its dividend, both of which could be sapped by investments abroad. And with the company’s tax rate set to soar (a likely rise from 19% to 30% in 2012), Vivendi investors want it to settle down and focus on its at-home biz by buying out minority investors in such key units as Canal Plus.•

More Fuel on the NBC-U Fire The NBC-U maybe, maybe not, sale got more interesting yesterday as CNBC reported that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and John Malone's Liberty Media Corp are also eyeing the Peacock properties. That, of course, is in addition to Comcast which is reportedly looking at a New Co deal with General Electric which would give the cable company a 51% stake in NBC-U. If Liberty jumps into the bidding it will most likely be for a minority stake (Dr. John Malone's preferred modus operandi). If News Corp. joins the fray look for lots of government hemming and hawing as the company's Fox TV holdings will likely raise antitrust concerns.•

Cause for Holiday Cheer?
Best Buy is optimistic about the upcoming holiday season and is gearing up by amping up its marketing strategy. The retailer plans to release numerous Facebook applications and commercials referencing to the "Twelpforce" (Best Buy’s Twitter-based customer service effort) in an attempt to make an impact during this coming shopping season. Best Buy plans six or seven TV spots focused on branding, in addition to vendor commercials. More optimism is coming from advertising and marketing execs 34% of whom say they plan to hire within the next 12 months, according to a national study developed by The Creative Group. Fifty-two percent of those who plan to hire will be recruiting web designers or production staffers.
Of course, it can't all be good news and on the ad front the research firm Carat sees a glass half-empty. The firm now expects worldwide advertising to drop 9.8% this year after forecasting only a 5.8% drop. The US and Western Europe showed the most significant downgrade with adspend to fall 16.3% and 11% respectively in 2009. The internet is the only medium expected to grow this year.•
