DIRECTV To Offer Online NFL Sunday Ticket In NYC

31 Aug 2009 - 15:28 by soullezz    Industry News |

What do you do if you live in New York City, can't get access to DBS service in your building and want DIRECTV's NFL Sunday Ticket? In years past, you simply had to move to New Jersey or Connecticut, but starting this season DIRECTV will begin offering a broadband-only version of NFL Sunday Ticket for $350.

"Manhattanites: No need to go roaming the city in search of a bar that's showing your favorite team," the provider says in its marketing for the new service. "Just crack open a cold one and enjoy every NFL game, every Sunday, on your computer -- PC or Mac."

The online-only option will reportedly only be available to households that cannot receive the satellite package, and will allow only one game to be viewed at a time. Blackout rules will also apply for games already being broadcast in the New York metro area. DIRECTV subscribers outside the region can purchase online access to NFL Sunday Ticket as a $100 add-on to their football package service. If the online-only service does well in Manhattan this year it is expected to roll out nationwide with the 2010-11 NFL season.

Study: Set-Tops Surviving The Recession

27 Aug 2009 - 13:51 by soullezz    Industry News |

According to a new report from market research firm iSuppli, global sales of set-top boxes are on track to rise this year thanks to HD and IPTV rollouts and market growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Based on the company's data, set-top shipments are set to grow 4.2 percent in 2009 to 136.7 million units, up from 131.2 million last year. By 2013, set-top sales will reach 201 million systems annually, iSuppli said. Not surprisingly, advanced new features will contribute to this growth.

“Premium boxes -- like DVR-enabled STBs and HD products -- will grow at a substantially higher rate than the 4.2 percent level for the overall STB market in 2009," said Jordan Selburn, iSuppli's principal analyst. “These STBs will buoy the entire market as non-DVR and standard-definition from this point forward.”

Premium box sales almost doubled to 22.4 million in 2008 and will increase 28 percent this year.

Wall Street Upgrades DISH Outlook

26 Aug 2009 - 12:59 by soullezz    Industry News |

Thanks to better than expected subscriber additions in the second quarter, Collins Stewart analyst Tom Eagan on Tuesday said he expects DISH Network to lose fewer net subscribers going forward.

The analyst is now forecasting that DISH will lose about 78,000 net subscribers this year, down from his previous estimate of 417,000 losses, due to higher gross additions and lower churn. Overall, the provider is now expected to add about 2.87 million gross subscribers this year.

It's not all good news for DISH, however. The company still has that TiVo penalty to deal with, and Eagan said he expects the higher retention costs associated with that lower churn (read: free hardware and other incentives) to eat into the company's profits this year. On Tuesday he boosted his full-year revenue estimate slightly from $11.67 billion to $11.72 billion but trimmed income expectations for 2009 to $2.8 billion.

Study: Customers Love The Bundle

21 Aug 2009 - 17:27 by soullezz    Industry News |

According to a new report from Parks Associates, broadband customers that bundle their services with video and voice offerings are on average 15 percent more satisfied with their providers and more receptive to value-added services.

"Broadband services are no longer measured by delivering a single service over one network to one device," said Kurt Scherf, principal analyst with Parks Associates. "Service providers help themselves by emphasizing customer support and high-quality service offerings. Beyond the near-term benefit of higher customer satisfaction, they can leverage current service deployments and management systems to reap future benefits such as reduced CAPEX and the ability to deliver emerging connected home applications."

Triple-play subscribers are generally happier with their services than the national average, Parks said, and more likely than the average subscriber to take the plunge on premium entertainment services, premium technical support, provider-deployed home networks and other add-on offerings.

Wall Street Remains Bullish on DIRECTV

18 Aug 2009 - 14:48 by soullezz    Industry News |

Pali Research analyst Richard Greenfield on Monday wrote that he expects DIRECTV to add about 1.1 million net new subscribers in 2009, up from the 860,000 net it added in 2008, and post 5 percent earning gains for the year.

This is in a recession year, remember.

"While the cable industry struggles (and fails) to maintain its video subscriber base, DirecTV continues to significantly outperform," he wrote in a note to investors. "The combination of a weak economy and increasing competition is taking its toll on all multichannel operators. However, DTV continues to find a way to grow its video business at the same time that cable operators appear to have almost given up on the video side of their business with an increasing emphasis on broadband and telephony additions."

Although the company's planned spinoff of DIRECTV Latin America will take a bite out of the parent's earnings this year, Greenfield added, DTV should be able to bounce back quickly and, without those Latin American operational expenses, be able to continue growing into 2010.

Analyst: Things Looking Up For DISH, EchoStar

14 Aug 2009 - 11:55 by soullezz    Industry News |

DISH Network's second quarter results, released this week, have at least one supporter on Wall Street: Citigroup analyst Jason Bazinet.

Following the DBS provider's announcement that it had added 26,000 net new subscribers in the quarter despite a 0.4 percent slip in revenues, Bazinet reiterated his "buy" recommendation on DISH's stock and upgraded his full-year estimates for the company, predicting reduced churn and higher net subscriber additions. "Even with recent strength in Dish shares, we believe (the stock's) valuation remains compelling," the analyst wrote in a note to investors.

Bazinet is also bullish on the prospects for DISH Network's sister company, EchoStar, raising his outlook on that stock this week as well.

"The bottom line is that EchoStar is a far more attractive equity than it was 18 months ago," he said. "The firm is generating cash, the largest negative catalyst [i.e. exposure to TiVo litigation costs, which has been limited] is off the table, and the potential for some substantial contract wins is closer than it was 18 months ago."

DISH Adds Subscribers in Q2

11 Aug 2009 - 15:05 by soullezz    Industry News |

DISH Network on Monday surprised investors by reporting that it had added some 26,000 net new subscribers in the second quarter to end the period with about 13.6 million total customers.

DISH lost about the same number of net customers in Q2 of '08.

But it was not all good news for the DBS provider, which saw revenues decline 0.4 percent in the quarter to $2.904 billion. Income is where DISH took the biggest hit however, as profits plunged from $336 million this time last year to just $63 million in the second quarter of 2009. Presumably, though DISH did not elaborate on its results, the company has been spending heavily to acquire those new customers and that spending has eaten into the company's profits.

Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett, however, was not moved by the positive subscriber numbers.

"At first glance, it's tempting to view Dish network's 2Q results as a clear win," he wrote Monday. "But as is so often the case with Dish, it's where investors weren't looking that holds the key." Moffett highlighted weak cost controls and rising subscriber expenses as areas of particular concern.

The new service enables rural communications among 1,300 sites across the South American country --- Although Sirius XM's revenues increased one percent in the second quarter to $607.8 million, the satellite radio provider lost about $157 million in the period after some $132 million in charges. Also, for the first time since the company was founded in 2001, Sirius actually lost customers in the quarter, ending down about one percent with 18.4 million subscribers.

PROGRAMMING: Verizon To Carry SD Hallmarks; No Epix For DIRECTV

FiOS already carries the channels in HD --- DIRECTV says it will probably not carry Epix, the premium movie channel being developed by Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount. ESPN Responds to DISH Lawsuit

7 Aug 2009 - 15:47 by soullezz    Industry News |

The lawsuit that DISH Network filed against ESPN earlier this week has elicited a reaction from the programmer.

"We have repeatedly advised Dish that we are in full compliance with our agreement and have offered them a distribution opportunity with respect to ESPNU and ESPN Classic consistent with the rest of the industry," wrote Katina Arnold, ESPN's vice president of communications. "We will not renegotiate settled contracts and will vigorously defend this legal action, the apparent sole purpose of which is to get a better deal."

DISH Network is suing ESPN over an alleged breach of contract related to carriage of its ESPNU and ESPN Classic channels, claiming that the sports programmer violated the terms of a 2005 contract. That document reportedly included a clause that would require ESPN to provide DISH with carriage terms equal to or better than those offered to other providers.

DIRECTV Expands Revenues, Customer Base in Q2

7 Aug 2009 - 15:47 by soullezz    Industry News |

In its second quarter reporting on Thursday, DIRECTV declared itself the largest pay TV provider in the world with over 24.2 million customers on its rolls. The milestone came after the DBS provider added 224,000 net new U.S. and 128,000 Latin American subscribers in the quarter.

Interim CEO Larry Hunter credited DIRECTV's recent bundling partnership with AT&T for the gains, highlighting the company's 1.51 percent churn rate and over one million gross additions during the period.

In terms of financials, The DIRECTV Group's second quarter revenues increased 9 percent to $5.22 billion, with U.S. revenues jumping 8 percent and Latin American revenues increasing 11 percent. So far this year, the parent company's revenues are up 8 percent versus the first half of 2008 on strong subscriber growth, although all of those new customers have eaten away at DIRECTV's operating profits due to acquisition costs and service expenses.

Like many on Wall Street, Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett was impressed by DIRECTV's steady growth. "Quarter after quarter, what stands out for DirecTV is the sheer predictability of their solid results," he said. "Yet again, DTV has met – almost precisely – the relatively high expectations that had been set for virtually every operating metric, large and small."

Patent Office Rejects TiVo's Timewarp Patent Claims

5 Aug 2009 - 13:17 by soullezz    Industry News |

The lawsuit exchange between TiVo and EchoStar got a little more interesting this week when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) rejected some of the the DVR maker's claims on its Multimedia Timewarping System patent.

The ruling effectively recharged EchoStar's position in the case and brings the recent decision in TiVo's favor into question.

“We are pleased that the Patent and Trademark Office issued an initial office action rejecting Tivo’s software claims as invalid in light of two prior patents," EchoStar said in a statement. "These software claims are the same claims that EchoStar was found to have infringed in the contempt ruling now pending on appeal. We believe that the PTO’s conclusions are highly relevant to the issues on appeal as well as the pending sanctions proceedings in the district court.”

Despite the setback, TiVo of course remains optimistic about its position in the case.

"It is not unusual for the PTO to provide a preliminary finding of invalidity and to then later find that the claims are valid after hearing an explanation from the patent owner," the company said. "TiVo believes that the PTO's preliminary finding will not affect EchoStar's appeal of the June 2009 ruling by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas finding EchoStar to be in contempt of court."

Despite Recession, Last 12 Months Have Been Good To Eutelsat

3 Aug 2009 - 13:38 by soullezz    Industry News |

The international satellite community got another boost on Friday when French satellite operator Eutelsat Communications reported solid gains for its fiscal year that ended on June 30.

Not only did the operator report a 7.2 percent increase in total revenues for the year, net income jumped 43.6 percent in that time as compared to the 2008 fiscal year. Overall, Eutelsat brought in EUR 940.5 million ($1.34 billion U.S.) in the last 12 months, EUR 247.3 million ($353 million U.S.) of which remained as profit.

Given these solid results, the company raised its short and medium term goals for fiscal year 2009-2010 to a seven percent growth rate and EUR 1 billion in revenues.

"This year's revenue increase across our full range of activities is all the more remarkable as the additional resources brought by new satellites were available only from the third and fourth quarters," said Eutelsat CEO Giuliano Berretta. "Our strong performance also reflects the mobilisation of the teams working at Eutelsat and their commitment to ensuring customer satisfaction, to increasing our competitive edge and our capacity to innovate."

"While less than ten percent are willing to pay a monthly fee, demand is still on an upward trend, especially as the set-top connects to more and more services."
