We recently received the nFusion Phoenix for review. Right out of the box you can tell this is a quality piece of hardware. The chassis is sturdy and attractive and it comes with all the cables you need to connect it to your TV or enterntainment center. In addition to the standard set of features most FTA units have, this unit also has an ethernet port already built in, enabling a set of multi-media rich options to be delivered online as well as via satellite.
You won't find a more affordable or more stable Ethernet Enabled FTA receiver on the market. Priced to move at only $219.99, you can purchase the Phoenix or its little sister the Solaris at http://www.efta.us today!!
OK boys and girls, you have got to get this new SonicView 8000HD from www.efta.us. It was so simple to install and setup, the time from out of the box to operation took a mere 10 minutes for me (My Motor Dish was already set up though). The SonicView 8000HD is a very well constructed box as well. I was impressed with the temperature controlled fan which provides cooling for the CPU and all other components, which solves overheating problems in a confined space or as some do “Stacking Components On Top Of Each Other” The friendly GUI was nice and easy to use and the EPG sets this IRD apart from all others.
After setting it up for operation, I noticed a picture better than no other. The HDMI output color burst was phenomenal and so crisp, I had to take a double take as I looked at the picture. I also loved the front mount USB port which is used for uploading files and recording. Oh, and by the way I recorded some shows on my 8GB USB flash drive which was Sweet. The motor function worked great too, as I expected. Oh, I almost forgot the boot speed and scanning of channels was incredible as well, almost floored me.
As being a Pioneer in Sat since 1974, this IRD is awesome, friendly to use, and the specs are here to stay. My only gripe is no dual tuner for recording while watching another channel, and no USB port on the back for an external USB hard drive, but that’s me .
I still rate the SV8000HD a 9.5 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best!! I test other HD IRD’s also, but this SV8000HD ROCKS!!! And don’t forget to order this awesome IRD from www.efta.us, the Most trusted site in FTA with live help 24/7 at www.dsscommunity.com

ViKosmo Wireless Access Point and 4 Port Router
ViKosmo Wireless Access Point VK-100APg
Two excellent internet products from ViKosmo, the wireless access point (VK-100APg) is a true multi-use device. Hook it up to a computer one time to set up its router connectivity functions (yes, it works with ANY router) and then connect it in whatever room you like with whatever device you like. Sold as the WiFi ethernet add-on for the nFusions Nova (as seen on EFTA.us) you can use it to give your nFusion easy WiFi ethernet access, or use it as a playlink for any device with a standard high speed ethernet port (10/100 Ethernet). It functions on both the 801.2x B and G formats (most N routers are backwards compatible to at least G format). The most impressive thing about this device compared to other wired port to WiFi adapters is that you only need the one device to function wirelessly. Previously you had to have 2 connector blocks, one that plugged into your router and one that plugged into the device, while this is user friendly, you had no real way to tell if your connection was encrypted or secure, nor could you use more than one such set in your house due to frequency interference. We have even heard stories of such devices interfering with cordless phones. While this device does require a small amount of end user set up (no more so than you would need to set up a PC to work on your network), it does not interfere with most wireless devices (none that we have yet encountered).
The setup was very easy, just follow the instructions and it works without any trouble. You just connect it to a computer (no internet connection is required at that point) and follow the simple setup directions and it is ready to use with any ethernet device on your network. The only time you need ever hook it up to computer again is to change its network settings.
A small, low profile device, it will sit atop any ethernet enabled device without notice. And its three indicator lights tell you everything you need to know about its function: power, link, and WLAN.
You can tell at a glance what the error is if something is not working.
ViKosmo Wireless 11b/g AP Router with 4 ports Switch VK-100RTg
The VK-100RTg is an easy to use router with excellent features, it integrates easily into any network with just a few clicks of the mouse. With four LAN ports and one WAN port you can use this
router as a gateway for your wired or WiFi network modem or extent your wireless scope with the WDS feature by bridging two wired networks. It works on the standard network protocols, and unlike most 7 or 11 channel routers, this one has 13 channels so you are less likely to overlap your other wireless devices such as cordless phones. It has a built in NAT firewall protecting your network from intruders, yet can act as a gateway server allowing you to serve from your network computers, and the quick installation guide will have even the newest network users up and running in minutes.
This item is an excellent companion to the Wireless Access Point (especially for people who have a non-PC ethernet device and don't have a WiFi home network already set up -- ie. nFusion, xbox, or any other wired or wireless ethernet device).

Best unit for the money is the ExtremeView Magnum. It is available from http://www.EFTA.us for only $129.99.
The specs on this unit are impressive, the STm5105 processor is extremely powerful and it has 4mb of flash ram and 32mb of SDram, which gives it ample processing power and memory for any future needs. No other receiver has these specifications in this price range! The 32mb of SDram allows this unit to scroll smoothly in the very large 7 day program guide.
On the back of the Magnum, you will find composite, component and s-video connectors along with satellite input and loop. There is an AC-3 audio output that works without having to modify the channel lists.
Right from the start we were impressed with the sharp clear video. The menu system is comprehensive and user friendly, among the options is a world map which shows where your satellite is in relationship to your continent. The antenna setup is very precise, allowing any combination of antenna hardware and it supports all current dishes and switch types.
It has both sat scan and blind scan, this unit found more channels with blind scan than any unit we have scanned with before. And with powerful channel list, favorites, and sorting options we found that channel management was fun rather than tedious.
It makes a fine addition to anyone’s home whether you need a main room receiver or a secondary room.

-- Posted by soullezz on Sunday, May 6 2007 Wow! again -- WOW!
Over the years we have had the opportunity to review many products, very rarely do we get the opportunity to review a product that truly impresses us and after receiving the CoolNavi 700 we are very impressed with it and quite excited about the CoolNavi line of products. We are sure this item will "WOW" you as much as it did us.
We received it in earlier in the spring and waited to write our review until it went to market which was actually was for the best as we had more time to play with it. After several weeks of driving around testing the GPS navigation and playing with all the other included systems we have been truly impressed. With a seven inch touch screen, and lots of portable media interfaces such as CF, SD and USB and audio/video input/output it is clear that this is no mere navigation unit. This is a full blown GPS mobile media system! It comes with an easy installation kit and complete set of accessories including a multimedia card reader/writer, car power adapter, and remote control.
Versatility
You can plug in a DVD player or game system to the A/V input and keep the kids happy for hours, or load media to a USB drive and enjoy hassle free media entertainment which is enriched by the built in FM modulator so the sound broadcasts to your car stereo system wirelessly. With Windows CE support there is quite a bit of other software that can also be added on, or just load up an SD card with your favorite tunes.
With Audio and Video output you can also connect it into your vehicle sound system and additional portable video devices (rear seat displays!). It has a PiP function for those who like to multi-task (GPS and Music, GPS and movie, etc.) and this unit even comes preloaded with some video games so you don't even need to hook up anything else to keep the kids occupied!
Safety
Who hasn't "almost" hit something when backing up? This unit also supports vehicle reverse cameras, making it a valuable centerpiece to a vehicular safety system.
Navigation
The maps are impressively complete, after having heard numerous complaints from other GPS owners that their own street is not even in their devices, we were happy to see that the roads were fully mapped in the CoolNavi 700 and while other GPS systems require you to buy map updates or even pay a monthly service fee, map updates for the CoolNavi are free. We drove in suburban, urban and rural areas and found that the maps were equally complete and that the GPS signal was picked up clearly everywhere we went. The navigation software is highly intuitive and user friendly. You can plan routes based on address or Point of Interest (which can be done by type of place such as hardware store, or name of place such as Home Depot) and even include stops in your route with the "route by" function so that you can go to Home Depot by way of you mother's house so she can go with you! With three display styles for the active map - flat, planar and split - and audio instructions "in 0.5 miles turn right" the navigation is so customizable and easy to use that you will wonder how you ever got by without it, and don't worry about missing a turn the system automatically updates your route. You need never be lost again!
The CoolNavi 700's cutting edge versatility allows you to travel locally or long distances with confidence and comfort. Available now at http://www.EFTA.us/ for only $649.95.
The Coolsat 8000HD is now available from EFTA.us for only $399.99
The 1st thing you notice when you open the box, is how impressive this unit looks. It is wide and low, and has very sleek lines which flow across the face.
The remote, is well laid out, and fits comfortably in your hand. The buttons are very easy to reach, read, and are in a sensible order.
On the back you will find, Component, HDMI, s-video and composite outputs, an optical AC3 audio output, an RS232C port for upgrading software and has an ATSC off air HD tuner. When you connect the unit, it will default to 1080i output, if your TV is not 1080i, you hit the exit button on the front panel to select from 1080i, 720p, 720i, or 480p. Once you have your resolution selected, you will find the newly designed menus very easy to use, and configure.
The setup goes quickly, and you will find the features that you know and love from Coolsat there. Auto-scan as always is there, with the ability to select as many satellites as you need to all be scanned in automated succession. You will also find the local channels renumbering feature available. This allows you to tell the Coolsat, where you live, and it will find your locals, and place them in their proper spots, like 8, 10 as they would be on your antenna tuner.
The unit has fast channel changing, and an impressive new program guide.
It does an OUTSTANDING job of up converting standard resolution channels to your selected output. I tested this recently, on a 92 inch HD projector, and a 65 inch rear projection HD. Both performed extremely well, in up converted and true HD signal modes.
I have personally found that many have rushed out to buy an HD TV, only to find that their standard FTA and other devices look like garbage on them. This is caused by the extreme resolution of the newer TV, showing all the flaws, of the lower resolution devices. The up converting on this box, fixes that problem. Even if you don't have any true HD channels, the picture from this box from any satellite system will look much better than anything you have seen from standard devices.
This brings me to the conclusion that this box is ideal for everyone with a high resolution TV.
We recently received the Neusat SP 6000 for review, available from EFTA.us for only $99.99. After testing the receiver for several days we are very pleased with the product. It performed well in three categories which we feel define overall quality in a satellite receiver; ease of use, eye appeal, technical features.
Ease of Use
Upgrading software doesn't get any easier, just pop in your USB flash drive (included with receiver) and select upgrade from USB in the menus, or hook it up to your computer and update it as you would any other FTA receiver. The menus are easy to navigate and fully featured, including many features which are unique to the Neusats such as selecting the type of transition for channel changes as well as many preset options for antenna hardware. High quality, responsive hardware and ease of use make this is an excellent choice for new users or seasoned veterans.
Eye Appeal
"Basic black is back in style", when you look at the Neusat SP 6000 you can't help but fall in love. The curved front lines of the receiver give it a smooth look that, combined with the black chassis, make it an attractive addition to any entertainment system. The remote is very user friendly with buttons that are easy to read and conveniently placed. The buttons you will use most often are right where your thumb will rest when holding it, and spaced and sized so that you can easily find and press the correct buttons without even looking at the remote. Physical appearance is not the end of the attraction for the Neusat; when you enter the menus you get another pleasant surprise. The main menu appears directly over the channel you are currently viewing in a semi-transparent cut-out with icons that are easy to navigate and have "pop-up" hints so you can find what you need quickly. The menus themselves are attractively designed in easy to read colors and text.
Technical Features
It's response to the remote control is very fast press the button and it goes right to it. With composite video, S-video, and component video outputs it will meet or exceed your video needs, combine that with composite or optical (digital S/PDIF) audio options and a co-axial R/F combined output and you have a full set of hook ups for any entertainment system. Beep sound with signal meter (which also has standard and Oscilloscope style readouts), zoom in/out function, and audio viewer on radio channels are a few of the outstanding features built into this receiver. It has storage for 6000 TV and radio channels for C and Ku band reception. Overall this receiver stands above most others in technical hardware aspects and its software is among the best first releases we have seen, we expect future releases to hold many improvements that will make this one of the most desirable receivers to own.
In conclusion, the Neusat SP 6000 is an impressive receiver. The pricing and features make it one of the best values on the market. Order yours today from EFTA.us! Be sure to check out EFTA.us often as new products become available frequently!

CaptiveWorks CW3000HD Media Center
-- Posted by soullezz on Monday, February 18 2008 This item is available at EFTA.us.
If you are looking for a diamond, look no further. There is nothing on the market even remotely close to the Captiveworks CW3000 high definition media platform.
Aside from its ability to tune satellite TV, it has a DVD burner, a web browser (Firefox), and it can stream media to computers on your network or play media files from a network computer, play media files from a USB stick or (CD/DVD,) view IPTV channels over the internet, play satellite or internet radio channels, tune local TV broadcasts and it has the capacity to tune one channel and record another simultaneously. And did I mention games? You can add an external wireless (or wired) keyboard and mouse or you can just use the remote when you are not browsing the internet. You can even add your own hard disk drive (for storage.) And since I mentioned it, you can also add a second additional hard drive and use it as a windows computer (dual boot) with all the windows accoutrements you wish. You can also connect to a wireless hub seamlessly. There aren't many things this Linux based TV/Multimedia box can't do.
Setup went smoothly. Channel scanning was fast and simple to do. The CW3000 supports many different types of LNB's. It will take a little time to get used to how to navigate through the various menus and get to where you want to go, but there's nothing like a little exploration and testing to cure ignorance. Learning what button on the remote does what will take a little getting used to, but that's like any new remote control.
There are some issues regarding satellite hi-def channel viewing but nothing fatally flawed. First of all, the older units need a processor upgrade which costs about $60 for viewing mpg4 hi def channels, however mpg2 hi def channels will play without an upgrade. The newer version of the cw3000 comes complete with the upgraded processor but to scan hi def sat channels on any cw3000, an external 8PSK adapter is also needed. The cw3000 is designed to work with the Skywalker1 and the CW3K 8PSK adapters. Both of these products are solid and practically fail safe as long as they are not abused. About the only other problem I have experienced with the CW3000 occurred when switching between mpg2 and mpg4 hi def channels or the other way around. It may take one or 2 tries switching off and on differently formatted HD channels to get them to play, but I suspect that this is a software issue that will resolve in time. The Captiveworks developers are constantly hard at work improving their software.
The back of the box looks like most any computer because that's basically what the cw3000 is, a finely integrated multimedia friendly AMD computer with an Asus motherboard running on Linux. The operating system is stored on and boots from a 1GB internal USB flash drive. Every component and PCI slot has been setup with devices that are supported by the CW3000's operating system and drivers. Other types of devices one may wish to add are also supported which include massive hard drives, USB support for flash drives; mouse’s and keyboards among other things. The possibilities are too numerous to mention here but support is available for many devices that work with Linux. Most users will never need off the beaten path devices, but getting EVERYTHING out of this box that it is capable of delivering is an adventure to say the least!
Since I have been testing the older model with almost nothing to complain about (see above,) I used a DVI-HDMI adapter cable to hook up to my 52" Sony Bravia HD LCD TV. Analog audio out comes through a little green jack like the one on your computer's sound card or motherboard. The units ship with an adapter for analog audio which is a mini stereo to RCA cable. A coaxial S/PDIF audio output is also furnished and the newer version of the CW3000 includes an optical S/PDIF audio output.
Video outputs: for setup purposes or for use with a computer monitor instead of TV, a standard VGA monitor output is provided. For viewing the best quality Hi-Def video, there is a DVI output on the older version and an HDMI output on the newer one. The newer version has no composite output for video and the older version does, however both models support VGA, S-video and component (RGB) video outs which come in handy for older TV's without an HDMI or DVI input. The component (RGB) video output supports HD formats from 480i through 1080i. All modes of HD video are supported through the HDMI or DVI video outputs from 480i all the way through 1080p.
Once I learned to navigate the on screen menus and use the remote control, I discovered just how user friendly this box really is. Even software updates are just a couple of clicks on the remote away. Factory updates and 3rd party software can be applied either via an internet connection or USB flash drive. I know of no FTA receiver that can play .avi movies right from a USB stick to my Hi-Def TV. This one can and it can even author DVDs from common video files or burn music CDs. Indeed there are few computers that can perform these seemingly simple tasks without spending money on more software, more hardware and possibly suffering a brain cramp or two in the process. Such pleasantries are to be found all over this box. There is nothing on the FTA market today that has as many features provided with the CW3000. Its MSRP is a hefty $500 but for all that it can do for you, $500 is an amazing steal of a deal.

Valentine's Day Do's and Don'ts
-- Posted by soullezz on Tuesday, February 5 2008
The Valentine's Day Don'ts
1. Don't forget. I think that the worst thing I could do about Valentine's Day is forgetting all about it. Put it on your calendar in big red letters. And a few days before, make sure you put a reminder in your day planner or your PDA.
2. Don't buy kitchen appliances. Or anything else practical. Valentine's Day is supposed to be a little extravagant. A new blender is not—I repeat, is not—romantic! Whatever gift you choose should be nice and out of the ordinary.
3. Don't do the same thing you did last year. Even if it worked well, your partner will appreciate something new and different. She wants to know that you thought about her as you planned your Valentine's Day gift or event.
4. Don't give her lingerie. Now, I know the people at Victoria's Secret will not like this, but lingerie is a very dangerous gift. You can get the wrong size, which is a big problem. You can get the wrong color. But most importantly, when guys give lingerie they often have one thought in mind, and giving lingerie can really backfire. Just resist the temptation and be a little more creative.
5. Don't have unrealistic expectations. While your partner wants to be pampered, you also have to understand that her day is filled with many demands—kids, work, house, and more. Make sure you go the extra mile, but keep your expectations realistic and in check.
6. Don't overspend. Particularly if you share a bank account and a credit card with your sweetheart, breaking the bank is a bad idea. Keep within your budget and have the nicest evening you can afford. If it is too much, she'll likely be panicked about money and too stressed to have fun.
7. Don't talk about an ex. One of the surest ways to spoil a Valentine's Day evening is to have your partner think you are thinking about another woman. Don't talk about your former wife or girlfriend; keep the conversation focused on your woman and life will be better.
8. Don't give her a generic card. She will not be impressed with the nicest card from the local Hallmark if you just sign your name. Add a note about how much you love her, how much she means to you, and any other positive feelings you have. The personal part is what is romantic to her, not how much lace is on the card or how much you spent on it.
9. Don't do guy stuff. Your favorite NBA basketball team may be in town, or you may be tempted to take her to a sports bar for dinner. Just don't. This is her night, so stay away from the guy stuff, and put her first. You can always record or TIVO the televised game and watch it tomorrow.
10. Don't spend the night online. Too many of us tend to get in front of the computer late at night for gaming, chatting or other online stuff. For this one night, leave the computer off and focus on your woman. She will be grateful for your undivided attention.
The Valentine's Day Do's
1. Send a gift to work. If your partner is employed, delivering or sending a Valentine's Day gift to work is a welcome idea. It will show her in front of her peers that she is loved and remembered on Valentine's Day.
2. Make a homemade Valentine. Cards from the store are nice, but your partner will really know you love her if you take the time to make your own Valentine card. Get out the scissors, red construction paper, white paper doilies and glue and get started. Your own little verse would add just the right touch. Taking time to do something out of the ordinary is romantic.
3. Cook for her. Once again, doing something out of the routine is an important way to show you care. Breakfast in bed, or cooking a romantic dinner for two can be fun for you and let her know you were willing to go the extra mile.
4. Remember romance. Valentine's Day for your partner is all about romance. That means taking the time to do the little extras like dressing up for your dinner out, leaving little love notes around, or being on time for your commitments. While guys aren't often good at romance, it is important to her. Try to see yourself as she sees you and then deliver beyond her expectation.
5. Turn off the electronics. While we live in a fast paced time with cell phones or personal digital assistants running our lives, Valentine's Day is not a time for interruptions. Turn off the phone, the Palm or Blackberry, and focus your attention on your significant other.
6. Write her a love letter. This is not an email, a text message or a card, but a real love letter. In your own handwriting, tell her what she really means to you. Tell her why you would choose her all over again if you had to. Remind her why you are thrilled that she is your kids' mom. She'll keep that letter as a cherished part of her life.
7. Watch a chick flick. Sure, you'd rather be watching the latest 007 film or WWF Smackdown, but she'll appreciate you sitting through a romantic movie. Consider The Lake House, While You Were Sleeping, You've Got Mail or Sleepless in Seattle if you are looking for one that you both might enjoy.
8. Offer her a massage. Many Valentine's Day experts recommend a day spa gift certificate as a great gift option for your sweetheart, but I think a personal massage is a wonderful alternative. Giving your woman a good foot massage or a solid back rub can really make her relax and feel good. Learn some massage techniques, pick up some massage oil and work out those stiff muscles.
9. Consider spreading gifts throughout the day. Rather than one big gift, you should try giving her a number of smaller gifts during the day. Maybe one gift at breakfast, leave one on the front seat of her car or in her medicine chest in the bathroom, one at work, and then another one on the front seat of her car before she leaves work. Going the extra mile to remember her during the day will pay big dividends in how she reacts the rest of the day.
10. Just relax. While I know these ideas sound like a lot of work, it is important to not overdo it. Don't try to cram too much into the day or into the evening. A leisurely pace is an important component of making Valentine's Day great for your woman.
AccuScore numbers game: Pats will find a way
-- Posted by soullezz on Saturday, February 2 2008
Based on 10,000 simulations, the chances of the Giants winning the Super Bowl are not great -- just 25 percent. The average simulation shows a score of New England 31, New York 21. These baseline simulations clearly favor the Patriots, but there are a number of things that could make this game a nail-biter.
Patriots QB Tom Brady is taking advantage of the warm, likely dry weather in Arizona and is having another 300-plus yard game with a three-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Giants' Eli Manning is good, but he is averages one interception per simulation despite not throwing one in the playoffs.

If Manning can come close to matching Brady, the Giants' chances improve by at least 12 percentage points. If Manning can be perfect in turnovers, then the Giants are in a virtual dead-heat with New England. The Giants have a 45 percent chance of winning, and the average score is much closer (Pats 28, Giants 26) if Manning does not commit a turnover.
Can the Giants convert in the red zone? The Giants use both Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw at running back, while the Patriots have gotten some great performances from Laurence Maroney and vitally important receptions from Kevin Faulk. In baseline simulations, Jacobs and Bradshaw are combining for 152 all-purpose yards and one touchdown. The Patriots' combo has the slight edge with 164 all-purpose yards and a touchdown.

Although the Patriots have the overall edge, the Giants are averaging more yards per carry, 4.8 to 4.1. Even with this advantage, the Giants are winning just 25 percent of simulations.
To pull off the upset, Jacobs will have to convert on third down and score touchdowns in the red zone. Despite averaging just 3.2 yards per carry in the playoffs, Jacobs is forecasted for 4.5 yards per carry versus the Patriots. If Jacobs can play at a high level, and excel in short-yardage and goal-line situations, then the Giants' chances improve by more than eight percentage points.
Maroney is the running back who could greatly exceed his overall season numbers. Maroney has had more than 100 yards in four of his last five games, including 122 in both playoff games. In AccuScore simulations we factored in only Maroney's last five games, including a 46-yard outing against the Giants in Week 17. If Maroney continues his recent tear, the Patriots are an overwhelming 81 percent favorite.
Is Brady that much better than Manning? We simulated the game with Brady playing for the Giants and Manning for the Patriots. The Brady-led Giants win 51 percent of simulations. They go from a 25 percent underdog to a slight favorite with Brady at the helm. Brady's presence helps Plaxico Burress, who averages nearly 100 yards receiving.
Peyton vs. Eli Last year's Super Bowl MVP, Peyton Manning, has plenty of experience playing against the Patriots. AccuScore replaced Eli with Peyton to see the impact. With Peyton at quarterback, the Giants' chances improve considerably (37 percent).
Conclusion
After running these alternative scenarios, the Giants are not at a big disadvantage at wide receiver or in the running game. They are losing 75 percent of simulations because Brady is forecasted to significantly outplay Manning. However, Jeff Garcia, Tony Romo and Brett Favre were also forecasted for better stats than Manning, and they all lost to Manning.
In simulations where the Giants win, Manning outplays Brady, but the statistics are not beyond reason. Brady still has the advantage in passing yards, but Manning has the better touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Jacobs is averaging 18 carries for 91 yards in wins versus just 15 carries and 63 yards in losses.
The Patriots are the clear favorites, but Giants fans have plenty of reasons to stay positive. If Manning does not turn the ball over and the running game can help the Giants' offense score touchdowns in the red zone, then this could come down to a final field goal. However, if the two-week layoff causes the Giants to lose some momentum while helping the Patriots get their record-setting offense back on track, then this one could be over by halftime.

Spacecraft Falling! Get Set to Duck?

If you're the kind inclined to worry, here's a real hand-wringer for you: Sometime as early as February, 7,000 lbs. of flaming metal are going to start raining out of the sky, and nobody can say exactly where on Earth it's going to happen. The upside is, there's almost no rational reason you should give it a second thought.
The approaching fireball of debris comes to us courtesy of an unnamed U.S. spy satellite launched in December 2006, which reached orbit perfectly well, but then suffered a breakdown that caused ground controllers to lose communication with it. "It's not necessarily dead, but it's deaf," John McDowell, an astronomer with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics unhelpfully told The New York Times. A deaf satellite, after all, is almost as bad as a dead satellite, when it comes to telling it to fire its thrusters so that it can stay in orbit, or at least come down in a safe place like the middle of the ocean. Without communications, the satellite becomes a falling cannonball colliding with the atmosphere at 17,500 mph.
That very atmosphere, however, helps ensure that we're in very little danger from being struck by this craft or any other incoming junk. Even billions of years after the formation of the solar system, space is still something of a shooting gallery, with meteors careening everywhere. The Earth is a very fat, very slow target for such flying rubble, but the high speed of the approaching rocks and the density of the planet's air cause anything but the biggest pieces of debris to burn up on their way down, producing nothing more dangerous than shooting stars.
That's not to say we're at zero risk from space junk. In the 50 years since the launch of Sputnik, the world's first satellite, and Explorer I, America's first satellite, rocket builders from all over the world have fired so much heavy hardware into space that the planet is now surrounded by a belt of litter consisting of some 10,000 objects four inches or more in diameter and many tens of thousands of smaller ones. Taken together, they're estimated to represent more than 900,000 lbs. of flying — and possibly falling — rubbish.
In 2006, wreckage from a plummeting Russian spy satellite whizzed dangerously close to a Latin American Airbus carrying 270 passengers. That near-miss took place over the Pacific Ocean, which is considered among the safest places in the world to bring down satellites due to its unpopulated vastness. The worst uncontrolled reentry in history occurred in July 1979, when Skylab, America's abandoned, 78-ton space station — which had long since run out of maneuvering fuel — came down earlier than planned, raining debris across the Australian outback.
Often, however, satellites and other spacecraft are brought down in a much more controlled way, their trajectories tweaked and adjusted before their terminal plunge so that they strike a precisely selected — and safely empty — spot. In 2000, the 17-ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory was gently steered back to earth this way. In 1970, one of the most storied spacecraft of all — the Apollo 13 lunar module, which served as a lifeboat for the crew when their command module was crippled by an explosion — sparked fears of nuclear contamination since it was on a return path to collide with Earth still carrying radioactive instruments that were supposed to have been left on the surface of the moon. As reentry approached and the astronauts clambered back into the command module through the tunnel that linked the two ships, the soon-to-be-jettisoned lunar module was already being targeted for a landing in a deep ocean trench off the coast of New Zealand. There it splashed down and sank — and there it remains.
The comparatively small spy satellite now wobbling its way home will not have nearly so precise a landing — but it is likely to have an equally uneventful one. Seventy percent of the Earth's surface is water, meaning that there ought to be a 7 in 10 chance that the craft will drop in the drink. The fact that satellites are usually targeted for flight over land narrows those odds some, but the equally important fact that the majority of the Earthly land mass is uninhabited widens them back up. That plus the small size of the doomed craft probably means its death will be nothing more than a pleasant sky show for the few people lucky enough to see it. If you're the kind inclined to worry, you might have to pick another problem.
Fun facts about Super Bowl XLII

Fun facts about Super Bowl XLII By Research | NFL Network
I. This is the 42nd Super Bowl and the second time it has been held in Arizona. Super Bowl XXX was held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona (Cowboys 27, Steelers 17).
II. The NFC leads 21-20 all-time but the AFC has won eight of the last 10 games after losing 13 straight.
III. The AFC is the home team in this year’s Super Bowl.
IV. To date 3,205,733 people have attended Super Bowl games.
V. No Super Bowl has ever gone to overtime.
VI. The team that has won the coin toss is 19-22 all-time in the Super Bowl and has lost the past four straight and nine of the last 11 games. The Patriots lost the coin toss in each of their three Super Bowl wins. They won the coin toss for Super Bowl XXXI and lost the game; they lost the coin toss for Super Bowl XX vs. the Bears and also lost that game. The Giants won the coin toss in Super Bowl XXXV and lost that game; they lost the coin toss in both Super Bowls XX and XXV and won those games. Careful when you cheer when the coin toss comes up heads ... winning the pregame toss doesn't mean a Super Bowl victory.
VII. The Giants-Patriots Super Bowl is the 12th Super Bowl to feature two teams that met during the regular season. The team that lost the regular-season meeting has won six of the previous 11 matchups. The last matchup was Super Bowl XXXVI between the Patriots and Rams (Rams won regular season; Patriots won the Super Bowl)
VIII. The Giants-Patriots Super Bowl is only the second time that the two Super Bowl participants have met in the final regular season game; the other occurrence was in 1977 when the Cowboys and Broncos met in Week 14 and then in Super Bowl XII. The Cowboys won both games. (The Giants and Patriots also met in the final game of this year's preseason; The Patriots won that game 27-20).
IX. The Patriots have 20 players with Super Bowl experience on their current roster; the Giants have three.
X. Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi will be playing in his fifth Super Bowl; he is the 15th player to play in five Super Bowls. He is the seventh player to play in five Super Bowls with the same team, joining Larry Cole (Cowboys), Cliff Harris (Cowboys), D.D. Lewis (Cowboys) Charlie Waters (Cowboys), Rayfield Wright (Cowboys) and John Elway (Broncos).
Packers, Giants deal with elements as Temperature expected to dip below zero at Lambeau
-- Posted by soullezz on Sunday, January 20 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Baby, it's cold outside.
So cold, one team has practiced with footballs straight out of the freezer. But not so frigid that many players say they will go sleeveless.
As for the plummeting temperatures being an advantage for the Green Bay Packers in Sunday's NFC championship game against the New York Giants, the hosts aren't quite so sure.
"It's not like they're coming from Florida," guard Daryn Colledge noted.
Of course, Colledge is from Alaska, so zero degrees might be balmy to him.
Forecasts are calling for thermometer readings around 3 degrees for the 5:30 p.m. CST kickoff; yep, a night game in January on the Green Bay tundra. If the wind kicks up, temperatures certainly will dive below zero, and head toward the NFL records.
The coldest game in NFL history was not the 1967 NFL title game at Lambeau Field when the Packers beat Dallas 21-17 in the Ice Bowl. It was minus 13 that day and the wind chill factor was estimated at minus 48.
But in the 1981 AFC championship game, while the temperature was minus-9, the wind chill plunged to minus-59 at Cincinnati as the Bengals beat San Diego 27-7.
BRRRRRR!!!!!
"You know in football we all like to think of ourselves as tough guys," Packers cornerback Charles Woodson said. "So no matter what the weather is, I think most guys will probably go out there no sleeves and play it just like it was 80 degrees."
Even if it's 80 degrees colder.
Brett Favre, who had little trouble in last week's divisional-round win over Seattle played amid snowflakes the size of golf balls, is 43-5 when the temperature in Green Bay is 34 or lower. He will make his 275th consecutive start Sunday in conditions suited for, well, staying inside. The NFL's career leader in most passing categories would take 34 -- or even 24 -- degrees for the final step to the Super Bowl.
And, no, Favre is not a big fan of icicles hanging from face masks.
"First of all, I don't know if I have ever gotten used to it," said the Mississippi native who last took the Pack to the Super Bowl 10 years ago. "It is for three hours during the week. We practice indoors -- not a whole lot different than anyone else. Yeah, you live in it. I'm not out making snowmen."
Packers coach Mike McCarthy recalled how poorly his team played on Dec. 23 in a 35-7 loss at Chicago, a game that even Favre admitted he was cold throughout. So McCarthy used some frozen balls at practice this week to help simulate likely conditions Sunday.
"Is that what was going on?" veteran wide receiver Donald Driver said with a laugh. "Basically, they never told us that the balls were coming out of the freezer, we just kind just felt it as we caught it: 'Wow, the balls are cold.' We thought most likely the balls had been outside all day, but they were in the freezer.
"Mostly, I think it's for concentration because when it's warm weather you basically don't have to concentrate too much on the ball. If you've got good hands, you're going to catch. But I don't care how good your hands is, in cold weather you have to focus on the ball and make sure you catch it before you run with it.
"You know you can't control the conditions, you can't control the weather, so you've just got to go out there and play regardless of the situation. So I think we've just been successful in it because we live here and we play and we wake up in the morning every day in it. But you still have to go out there and play."
The Giants (12-6) will show up and play, and likely play well considering they've won nine straight road games, including two in the playoffs. Both of those, of course, were in Tampa and Dallas, where anything below freezing is cause for panic.
Star defensive end Michael Strahan promises there won't be panic even if it is the coldest day any of the Giants have encountered.
"This is going to be a game of will, a game of whoever wants it the most," Strahan said. "That is what the playoffs are all about, so this is going to be a very interesting battle. Us, a team that has a strong will and plays well on the road, and that team that has a strong will and plays well at home."
2007 Darwin Awards

The Darwin Awards Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Nominee #1 What Goes Up Must Come Down 2007 Darwin Award Nominee
(20 June 2007, South Carolina) A passing cabbie found a 21 year-old couple naked and injured in the road an hour before sunrise. The two people died at the nearest hospital without regaining consciousness. Authorities were at a loss to explain what had happened. There were no witnesses, no trace of clothing, and no wrecked cars or motorcycles.
Investigators eventually found a clue high on the roof of a nearby building: two sets of neatly folded clothes. Safe sex takes on a whole new meaning when you are perched on the edge of a pyramid-shaped metal roof. "It appears as if [they] accidentally fell off the roof," Sgt. Florence McCants said.
This is a true Darwin Award trifecta: TWO people die, WHILE in the act of procreation, due to an ASTONISHINGLY poor decision. Bottom line: If you put yourself in a precarious "position" at the edge of a pointy roof, you may well find yourself coming and going at the same time.
Ironically, one of the deceased was named "Tumbleston."
-------------------------------------------
Nominee #2 Weight Lift 2007 Darwin Award Nominee
(27 July 2007, Guadalajara, Mexico) 24-year-old Jessica was working out in the Provincia Hotel's gym when she realised she needed something from the floor below. Instead of picking up the phone, using the intercom, or just walking downstairs, she decided that the open shaft of the industrial lift was the communications device for her. So Jessica stuck her head into the empty shaft to shout to the people downstairs. And somehow, she missed noticing that the elevator was coming up towards her. If the elevator had been going down, one could say that she was in no position to observe the approaching lift. But, leaving aside the stupidity of sticking your head into an elevator shaft, if she was looking down, how could she miss the mass of metal inexorably headed her way?
Since an elevator cage and a skull are both solid objects, one had to give. Let's just say, the elevator won. Jessica will be missed by her family, but not by the gene pool.
-------------------------------------------
Nominee #3 Support Group 2007 Darwin Award Nominee
"Gravity still works."
(28 July 2007, Czech Republic) A pack of thieves attempted to steal scrap metal from an abandoned factory in Kladno. Unfortunately for them, they selected the steel girders that supported the factory roof. When the roof supports were dismantled, the roof fell, fatally crushing two thieves and injuring three others.
(21 June 2007, Philippines) Three entrepreneurs planned to profit from stolen scrap metal. They entered a former US military complex and approached the prize: an abandoned water tank. Bedazzled by the potential upside, the three threw logic to the wind, and began to cut the metal legs out from under the tank. Guess where it fell? Straight onto the thieves. Their flattened bodies have not yet been identified.
(31 July 1997) Two teens were disassembling an electric tower with wrenches when it toppled to the ground. They apparently wanted to sell its aluminum supports for scrap, but they failed to realize the essential role the aptly named "support" plays in a 160-foot tower. One of the men was crushed by the collapse of the ten-thousand-pound tower, while the other dug himself out from under, a sadder but wiser man from his close brush with a Darwin Award. Darwin notes, "What are these thieves doing, playing a deadly game of Jenga?! This entire category may soon become too common, per the Rule of Excellence. See also Barn Demolition."

ExtremeView Magnum
-- Posted by soullezz on Sunday, December 31 2006
We recently got the ExtremeView Magnum demo unit sent to us to check out. It is now available from EFTA.us for only $165.99. After looking over the specifications, we were blown away. The brand new STm5105 processor is extremely powerful, more so then 99 percent of the units out there. It has a whopping 4 mb of flash ram, and an incredible 32 mb of SDram. Nothing else we know of has these specifications in this price range! The power of the processor will allow for anything we can see happening in the future. (Its not even running at full power right now, there is more pedal left on this race car!) The flash is massive, larger than we can even think about needing. The 32 mb of SDram allows this unit to scroll smoothly in the very large 7 day program guide. This unit comes with 1 of a kind, no questions asked replacement warranty. No more $40 to $60 charges for hardware repair when something goes wrong, no matter what caused the problem. This unit also has a jtag connector on board
On the back of the Magnum, you will find composite, component and s-video connectors along with satellite input and loop. There is an AC-3 output that works without having to modify the channel lists.
When you plug it in for the 1st time, you will find very sharp graphics. Among those is a super cool world map, which shows where your satellite is in relationship to your continent. The antenna setup is very precise, allowing any combination of uses. It supports all current dishes and switch types. It has sat scan and blind scans, which is extremely good, this unit found more channels with blind scan than any unit we have scanned with before. The support for this unit is outstanding, a very dedicated company, comprised of teams of people working at any hour to make this unit better and better. All in all we see the distinct possibility this will likely be the new premiere unit to have. It would make a fine addition to anyone’s home.

Neusat SP 6000
-- Posted by soullezz on Wednesday, October 4 2006
Outstanding Value We recently received the Neusat SP 6000 for review, available from EFTA.us for only $139.99.
It's response to the remote control is very fast, from channel changes to menu navigation there is almost no wait time on any feature. Press the button and it goes right to "it". It was easy to upgrade using the serial cable and the same basic procedure as any other FTA receiver. It also came with a 128mb USB flash drive for upgrading software, channels, and keys via USB drive. You never have to hook it up to a computer (or disconnect it from your entertainment system) to upgrade it. With composite video, S-video, and component video outputs it will meet or exceed your video needs, combine that with composite or optical (digital S/PDIF) audio options and a co-axial R/F combined output and you have a full set of hook ups for any entertainment system. Multi-picture screen formats (4, 9, 10, 13, or 16 still pictures), beep sound with signal meter (which also has standard and Oscilloscope style readouts), zoom in/out function, and audio viewer on radio channels are a few of the outstanding features built into this receiver. A Receiver with Outstanding Features
We recently received the Neosat iPro 1000 for testing and review. After testing this unit for several days we found that it has many features that go above and beyond the standard FTA receiver. It is diseqc1.2 compatible, has an Ethernet port for internet functions, IF loop out, cable/antenna R/F input, and a remote control with well arranged buttons for ease of use.
It supports Ku and C band and has EPG (electronic program guide) as well as TVGuide function which is a function overlooked by many manufacturers. The video quality was outstanding when compared side by side with other brands. The menu graphics are attractive and professional with an easy to use layout and a lot of eye appeal. It has memory for 1200 transponders and well over 2000 channels with Teletext and multi-lingual functions (menu and audio).
If that was not enough it has a chassis with sex appeal, with it's high gloss silver and black finish it will make an excellent addition to any home theater or entertainment system and includes the seven key functions right on the front for direct access to the receiver and its menus, this is a an especially positive point considering that many units do not give you this luxury (No fear of losing your remote with this one!!).
Overall the Neosat iPro1000 tested very well, was easy to use, and in our opinion would make an excellent unit for beginners and more advanced users alike.
Features « 120MHz Processor » « Memory Flash-ROM: 2MB » « SDRAM: 8MB » « Firmware Upgradeable through Internet via Ethernet Port » « MPEG-II Digital & Fully DVB Compliant » « Auto DiSEqC Scan » « DiSEqC Control 1.0, 1.2 Compatible » « Simple Satellite Scan » « Fast Multi-Satellite Search » « Blind Search » « 4, 13 Multi Picture Screen » « 3200 Channels Capable » « Fast OSD Response » « OSD (On Screen Display) with 256 Color » « Channel Sorting by Alphabet, Transponder and CAS » « Channel Control by Delete, Skip, Lock, Move, and Favorites » « Teletext Support » « Zoom Function » « Parental Lock/ Installation Lock/ Receiver Lock » « Various Languages (OSD & Menu) English, Spanish, French, German »

Neusat SP 6000
-- Posted by soullezz on Sunday, September 24 2006
Outstanding Value
We recently received the Neusat SP 6000 for review, available from EFTA.us for only $199.99.
It has storage for 6000 TV and radio channels, 1500 transponders, teletext by VBI and OSD, and C and Ku band reception. Overall this receiver stands above most others in technical hardware aspects and its software is among the best first releases we have seen, we expect future releases to hold many improvements that will make this one of the most desirable receivers to own.
